HUMAN-ELEPHANT CONFLICT MITIGATION PROJECT

LWE has listened closely to concerns of residents who share range with the African Elephant. Locally, and internationally, there is concern about the increasing number and severity of negative encounters between elephants and humans living in the same area. in 2003 and 2004, LWE has carried out with the local Bayei community a research project to find out why, how, where and when conflict occurs. Thanks to this study, we are begining to understand more clearly how increasing human pressures alter elephant activity and, vice versa, how negative elephant encounters impact humans. The findings from this research were presented to the Department of Wildlife and our report is currently used by expert consultants and members from the Okavango Delta Management Plan (Botswana government + IUCN) appointed to work on this important issue. It is hoped that our study will contribute to the development of effective mitigation strategies and techniques at the national, regional and local village levels.
